AWAY – a project around residencies has an open format. Accordingly, it also has much to report on what is going on beyond its own boundaries — under current calls, for example, on the numerous residency activities of the Austrian provinces or private promotion activities that are in part comparable with, but sometimes completely different from the residency programme of the Federal Ministry for Arts, Culture, the Civil Service and Sport. AWAY has developed a service tool for artists so that they can keep a good overview of this wealth of opportunities and find out which place and programme is the right one for their own way of working or their personal situation.
On principle, the programmes listed are addressing Austrian artists or artists working in Austria that are active in the disciplines of visual art, photography, performance, digital art, theory / curating, art criticism or art education. The selection primarily includes grants offered by public institutions in the Austrian provinces and, additionally, a few private initiatives based on positive experiences reported by artists.
In addition to these focus disciplines, there is also a selection of programmes for the following practices: architecture, literature, music / composition, design, film, fashion and the performing arts. AWAY and its service tools continue to grow and are therefore not exhaustive.
When we talk about the foreign residency programme of the Federal Ministry for Arts, Culture, the Civil Service and Sport in the context of current working conditions for artists and the Austrian art promotion scene, we also have to mention comparable activities in the provinces. Apart from programmes of provincial agencies, artists are supported by several other exchange and residency initiatives throughout Austria. Some of them are well known and have been active for years, others have just been launched.
A basic distinction is made between incoming and outgoing programmes – the former invite national and international artists to studios located in Austria, whereas the latter offer residency destinations abroad for artists working in Austria.
With hyperlinks to the awarding organizations, artists can get information on the most recent calls of incoming and outgoing residency programmes and forthcoming submission deadlines here.
