Support, Information and Documentation
at the Service of the Arts

Away Art Residencies networks current incoming and outgoing residency calls of the Austrian federal government and provinces as well as programs offered by independent initiatives in Austria and abroad for theorists and artists in the field of visual and media arts. Away raises the public visibility of art residencies and invites both experts and grant beneficiaries to take part and engage in a discourse. Away documents the renowned International Residency Program of the Austrian Federal Ministry for Arts, Culture, the Civil Service and Sport (BMKOES) and has established itself as a relevant forum for art residencies.

Art residencies promote an open-ended exploration of the artist’s own practice, new opportunities and transdisciplinary networking with other branches of art and science as well as the local creative scene.

List of Work of Away Art Residencies

Away Art Residencies compiles and characterizes, under current Calls, a large variety of Austrian art residencies offered at home and abroad and provides organizational support to interested artists in screening suitable options. Through On Tour and live studio visits on social media, Away Art Residencies opens up the artistic-theoretical practice of current participants in their temporary Studios to a wider public.

Away Art Residencies invites artists to share their personal residency experiences in a Diary and to strengthen the relevance of grant programs through active participation. Away Art Residencies presents the public mission, current development and the 50-year history of the International Residency Program of the BMKOES in different formats in order to firmly establish the importance of open-ended grant programs in social discourse.

Away Art Residencies develops the structure and remit of the platform in discursive exchanges with experts and on the basis of feedback received from participating grant beneficiaries in order to highlight needs-oriented contents and framework conditions that maintain the effectiveness of promotion programs.

With the publication AWAY – The Book about Residencies as well as the exhibition Stories from Abroad and the Laboratory as a discursive program, Away Art Residencies delivered a remarkable review. In 2016, Away was one of the first Austrian art initiatives that regularly handed over its Instagram account at #artistsaway to artists-in-residence of the BMKOES and individual Austrian provinces to illustrate their stays abroad in real time. More information on all the previous projects is available under Chronicles.

Away Art Residencies was designed by Alexandra Grausam together with Genoveva Rückert and Katja Stecher on behalf of the BMKOES.
