Christina Werner

Bow, the area in eastern London where the AIR accommodation is located in a townhouse of the Federal Ministry for Arts, Culture, the Civil Service and Sport, has won over my heart with its charm since the start of my residency in early July.

The residency programme gave me the opportunity to work freely in line with my own rhythm as the artist residency is not subject to a specific schedule. The Austrian Cultural Forum, which was my point of contact with regard to accommodation, helped me in word and deed, for example, in case of defects in the house.

The townhouse is suitable for residencies with family/child(ren). My son Lukas loved the skate park in Victoria Park ;-).

The grant allowed me to complete the artist book “Thank you. I prefer lions” and expand the installation “A Lion Tamer Story”.

During the 3-month residency, I produced collages of female lion tamers in different poses as well as ideas for the spatial installation. Moreover, an artist book was further developed during the residency and its production was organized. I also researched the biographies of the women/lion tamers featured and integrated them into the book.
