Accra,, Ghana01/25–03/25

Samuel Minegibe Ekeh

I honestly don’t have much to say as my experience in Accra wasn’t exactly a “wow” kind of experience. I encountered a few passive-aggressive situations that I’d rather not go into detail about here. That said, the overall experience was meaningful. I met many kind and inspiring people; Ghanaians are generally warm, welcoming, and honest. Of course, like anywhere else in the world, there are also individuals who may try to drain your energy or test your patience. Perhaps the way I was treated in certain moments had to do with my nationality, I can't say for sure, or maybe it was simply because I tend to carve my own path instead of following the crowd. Either way, it shaped my perspective and helped me grow both personally and professionally. As I mentioned earlier, despite some challenges, my overall experience in Accra was positive. I was able to accomplish a great deal during my stay, and I would still recommend Accra to others, especially those interested in experiencing a vibrant culture and creative community.

1. My stay in one word:
  Innovative
2. Dos & Don’ts in this place:
Dos: Definitely talk with locals to learn more, they are always willing to help. Go on a walk, get used to your neighborhood. Smile. Keep eye contact when talking with people.
Don’ts: Don't go out alone at night. Don’t overprice things – the locals hate this.
3. Things I miss since I am no longer there:
The smile of the people, the beach front, fresh fruits, kind people
4. Where to shop great supplies:
You can always google it. I was shopping for supplies from a store and I was using the local markets, but google works very well here in Accra.
5. What you should definitely bring with you from home:
Take the art supplies you need most with you from Austria.
6. Concerning art at this destination and where I visited the best exhibitions:
dot.atelier; Nubuke Foundation; ADA Contemporary Art Gallery; Accra Arts Centre; Gallery 1957; Amba Gallery
7. Around the studio – where I shop, drink my coffee and get the best lunch deal in walking distance:
[To be filled in if desired]
8. Where I like to spend the evening (dinner, drinks, best sound and networking opportunity):
Vienna City, Accra; The Republic Bar and Grill; SunCity Hotel - RoofTop Restaurant
9. What would have been useful to know before coming here and starting my residency:
I would have loved to know that things are slow in Accra in January.
