Helsinki, Finland01/26–03/26

These were long train journeys to Hamburg, then to Stockholm to catch the ferry to Helsinki. The flat-rate travel allowance almost covered the costs. At first, every second hour outdoors was a torment. After some time, however, I actually got used to the cold – even the ice crystals from my breath on the scarf had their own beauty. Without a Finnish bank account, some things unfortunately become more complicated (digitalization is very advanced here); medical care is efficient, but the Austrian insurance card is of no help at all.

I had a very friendly relationship with the other fellows, especially with the Chinese artist whose studio was opposite mine. Of my three residencies abroad so far, I find this format in Helsinki – so to speak semi-supported, with contact persons – the most pleasant. If necessary, you can turn to someone for help, there are weekly updates about cultural events and exhibition openings, and every Thursday there is a shared afternoon for exchange and coffee with other artists at the HIAP office on Suomenlinna.

1. My stay in one word:
  Very pleasant
2. Dos & Don’ts in this place:
Bring the studio key / don’t forget the studio key
3. Things I miss since I am no longer there:
I am still here, but the size of the studio and the view, the lighting conditions are fantastic.
4. Where to shop great supplies:
  Tempera Oy, Uudenmaankatu 16
5. What you should definitely bring from home:
In winter three scarves: one under the hoodie, one over it, and one for the face
6. Concerning art at this destination and where I visited the best exhibitions:
A lively gallery scene in Helsinki; Kiasma (Museum of Contemporary Art) is very good.
7. Around the studio – where I shop, drink coffee, and find the best lunch nearby:
There is a huge 24/7 shop, K-Market, with a similar density as Billa in Austria.
8. Where I like to spend the evening (dinner, drinks, good sound, networking):
  N.N.
9. What would have been useful to know before starting my residency:
If I had known how great everything – really everything – is, I would have looked forward to it even more.
